With what few possessions he owned, Tapion had relocated himself the the planet of Arlia. After serving his duties on Earth, he found little reason to stay there. Rumors of the planet Arlia had reached his (large) ears, and his mind was made up quick. Traveling to the planet was as monotonous as to be expected, but the prospect of fighters from throughout the galaxy gathering to battle seemed interesting. He was eager to have the opportunity to fight someone who could match him in ability.

When he finally arrived to the planet Arlia, the diversity of the location struck him as odd. With the recently open gladiator arena, a huge flood of men and women of different races had gathered to give it a go. The ordinary inhabitants of the planet were more than likely making a killing with all of the new tourists and fighters. Tapion had admiration for their business intellect. He, however, would get the greatest gain from it.

After sampling the cuisine, seeing the sights, and wandering about the city, he stumbled upon the colosseum. A sign outside directed tourists into the structure, where a booth sold entry passes. He supposed that he could size up possible competition before officially signing up, so he purchased a ticket and made his way and found a seat. He managed to get a small distance between himself and the particularly smelly individuals who were also attending the event.

Tapion watched many fights, and studied the many different fighting techniques employed by the unique fighters who had ventured so far just to participate in the bloodshed. A few distinctly brutal fights occurred too. The gladiator's were to best their opponent in most conflicts, where as the death matches happened only once a show. When a fighter got maimed the crowd would go wild. Tapion didn't find it as entertaining, but he took note of how to avoid such a condition for himself. The entirety of the experience was entertaining, but the final match was one for the ages. It was a match for the title of arena champion. The best of the best. The winner would claim it, and the loser would die fighting for it.

The champion was an alligator-like person named Vlad. The challenger was a native to arlia, an insect that could walk and talk, and was the size of a regular man, whose name was Jaq. They both wore similar armor, but champion's was adorned with gold. They both shared the leather wrappings, covering just their chests and upper thighs. Then sturdy boots and a small leather helmet that covered all but the face. The protection was minimal, but a shield the size of the fighter's torso made up for the protection that the rest of the getup lacked.

The champion seemed pretty confident, and boasted loudly raising the crowds morale for himself. When the battle started, he was the one to go on the offensive. Jaq had a hard time blocking the swings of his large axe, he himself held a short sword. When an opportunity opened, Jaq dipped low and brought his sword out, slicing at Vlad's calves. By lowering his shield, Vlad blocked the attack but his demeanor was altered, however. They traded blows, mostly striking armor or shield. Vlad was the first to open a wound in the forearm of his opponent, a slice had penetrated the bugman's defense, but the cut hadn't been deep since Vlad was not expecting a hit. Brute strength allowed Vlad to dominate. Eventually the slug fest ended, and the two began the real fighting. Vlad tossed his shield away and began swinging the small axe with two hands. The alligator obliterated his opponent's shield with his first swing of this nature, and followed it up with an unrelenting swing at the Arlian. Jaq managed to duck the attack, and shoved his sword up in a thrust attack at Vlad's midsection. The blunt tip didn't pierce the armor, but did set his opponent back a bit. The two parried several times, the Jaq made headway with a slice to Vlad's right arm. His arm seemed to go limp, but he didn't relent with his attacks. The alligator physically dwarfed his opponent in strength and size, but tactics allowed the smaller to survive. The pain in his arm had evidently pissed off the reptilian, and he raced after his opponent, swinging viciously in an attempt to end the battle in one fell swoop.

The champion cleared the distance between himself and his opponent each time he took a step back, and eventually Jaq found himself cornered. Vlad swung his axe, aiming for the head of his opponent. The axe swished just above his ducked head, and Jaq shoved his sword into the weakened point of Vlad's armor. The sword pierced deep this time, bypassing the armor due to the previous thrust. Vlad stumbled backwards, dropping his axe. With a jumping roundhouse, Jaq delivered a kick to the base of the hilt of his weapon.

Like a hammer hitting a nail into wood the sword plunged deep through the alligator-man, and as he spun around, the entirety of the crowd saw the gruesome, blood-covered tip of the sword, protruding from his back. The champion had fallen.

Several minutes were spent by the crowd cheering for the new champion. Tapion had not expected that outcome, but found the execution particularly entertaining. The smaller man had defied to do the unexpected, and Tapion could see how he was the new champion. After the crowd had, for the most part dispersed, Tapion drifted to the champion. His hope was that Jaq would be capable of recruiting him.

Tapion had approached the new champion, and after a short conversation, Jaq had agreed to get him recruited. Tapion was to show up the next day, early in the morning and meet another guy who would set him up with gear, and get him put on the roster. Tapion followed his instructions, after waking up in a nearby hotel. When he reached the coliseum, he searched around the perimeter and found another entrance. At the entrance stood a native arlian who stopped Tapion when he landed.

"State 'yer business." He said in a voice, not too deep, but apparently aged.

"I was instructed to come here in order to join the ranks of the gladiator."

"Oh? And who told yah to come here?"

"Jaq, the champion."

"Alright buddy, whatever you say."

"What was that?" Tapion said, his voicing show signs of aggression.

"Look pal. I have a few open slots I could fit you in. I'll give you a shot in a fight before we open for business. If you win there, we'll get 'yah in the show tonight, sound fair?"

"Sure thing."

Another official, an arlian, lead Tapion to a room where he was to be fitted for a suit of armor.

"We don't got no suits for your size uh guy." The arlian said dryly.

"What?" Tapion exclaimed.

"You can't fight. We ain't got a suit for yah."

"So what, I'll fight in what I have on."

"Nah, that ain't gonna cut it. You're too exposed. You'll get injured too easily, and the people will be getting gore they didn't pay for."

"I see a suit over there, it looks about my size. Let me wear it." Tapion replied, not waiting for a response. He took it upon himself to walk over and began equipping the gear.

"Hey, wait a sec, get back here." The man said, but Tapion had snuggly fit the tunic over his torso.

"See, it fits perfectly. I'll wear this." Tapion said happily.

"Yah know what. Go ahead. Wear that one, you'll look goofy, and the crowd might get a kick out of that."

Tapion didn't find a problem with the suit. The only difference between it and the other fighter's suits was that it was green, and the cap only covered the top of his head, allowing his hair to peak out the front and side. His former equipment was taken away, with promise to return it later.

Spoiler:

Virtually this with red hair.

You're damn right I did.

Tapion was further lead into a room filled with small arena's drawn out in the dirt. He was told that this would be his "qualifier" match. If he succeeded here, he would get his opportunity to fight for the crowd that night.

His opponent was a pushover, as far as he could tell. A native arlian with little more training than a novice. Tapion defeated him with ease. Considering the stature of his opponent, those overlooking the battle were none to impressed, but at least he had qualified.

His battle was an early one, of not real importance for anyone but himself. He was ready for whatever was in store for him.

He spent his time before the match resting in a remote area of the fighter's space beneath the coliseum, and when his fight was scheduled to begin, someone showed up to fetch him.

Snickers and giggles were abundant as Tapion passed through the crowd. "Dead man walking." and "What an idiot." were just some of the comment he heard while passing through the crowd of fighters. As he made his way to the entrance of the arena floor, he was stopped by a man dressed in a fighter's outfit.

"You're the fresh meat for our little pet? Good luck." He said, handing Tapion a short sword.

"Fresh meat? What?" Tapion said, but before he received an answer, he was pushed through the door.

A slam resounded as he toppled into the arena's base. The walls seemed much higher from that perspective, and the crowd so far away. As he studied the crowd, he noticed how many of them were cheering. Normally for a match of two rookies, many wouldn't pay much if any attention, and just pass the time waiting for the accomplished fighters to enter the ring. What was going on?

As Tapion contemplated the possibilities, a voice boomed out of a loud speaker.

"The Oowazari is hungry everybody. This valiant fighter has come to tame the starving behemoth." The voice rang out. Tapion recognized it as the man who had admitted him to the arena, "Barriers up!"'

At that command, a translucent dome raised around the walls of the arena floor. The formation reached about thirty feet in the air from the center of the arena to the center of the figure. Before Tapion knew what had happened, a large hole opened up in the ground, and a large insect-like monstrosity sprang out. Hundreds of legs covered it's dark, gray belly, and it's back was a deep, red shade. Large pincers jutted out from it's face, a mouth placed in between them. Tapion was in for much more than he had bargained for. Evidently, the green suit meant that the fighter was going to challenge this monster. Tapion had volunteered himself to be chow for this beast.

Without warning the insect raced toward him. The pincers closed in on him, but he leaped out of the way at the last second, performing a flip over the long body. As he flew past, he tested the back-shell of his 'opponent'. With all his might he swung the sword, but due to it being a dull copper item, it had little effect. Tapion landed at the back of the beast. It's body spanned about 20 feet, and while curled up on the ground, perfectly defended itself.

The beast twisted and twirled, getting itself in position to strike again. This time, Tapion jumped upward to avoid the attack. The beast had caught on to the tactic, but he had anticipated exactly that. As the monster's upper body raised to attack, Tapion shot down, getting beneath it. The soft underbelly made for a perfect target, and Tapion wasted no time getting a slash in. The cut went deep, but wasn't very long, considering the length of the blade. The beast let out a loud roar when Tapion withdrew, darting out from beneath it.

Now angry, the monster raced toward the alien and snapped at him with his pincers, but withdrew at the last second, then used it's momentum to thrust at Tapion with the sharp point of his tail. Tapion parried the strike, then retaliated with a counterattack. With his sword in his right hand, Tapion raced toward the monstrosity, leading the way with his left hand extended. Then, as he neared the beast's face, he shot his left hand forward, summoning a blade of ki. The surprising nature of his attack caught the insect off guard. His blade slashed both eyes of the behemoth. Then, after blinding his sense of sight, Tapion pulled his blade back through for another attack, taking off the four antenna atop the brute's head.

An ear splitting scream erupted from the monster as it shot back and forth around the arena. Because of it's size, it covered the entire arena in seconds, racing to and fro. Tapion struggled to dodge the enraged fiend. After a few moments, the beast settled down. With it's life waning, it had submitted. It had no way to fight back, so Tapion performed an execution.

Tapion thrusted his sword through the unprotected forehead of the insect. Blood poured from the wound, but the beast didn't struggle. It was deceased. The barrier covering the arena dispersed. The whole crowd looked on in shocked, silent awe.
