Character Name: John Dark

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: John stands just at five and a half feet in height, but his size does little to nothing to diminish his rugged muscled form. (He even gives some the impression of a badger, a small yet terrifyingly powerful beast willing to take on enemies several times his size.) The most noticeable aspect about him apart from his height and physique is his nose; it is a bit misshapen and crooked from multiple hits to the face until it finally stopped healing properly. He additionally features a shaggy mane of black hair and a wild goatee to match. Just like his hair, his vibrant green eyes help represent the ferocity that comes with the territory of having lived his whole life in a wild environment.

He prefers wearing his one sleeveless shirt to reveal a faded scar on his left shoulder received from one of his past fights to prove he’s not just acting tough. The scar lets others know he has survived things that do not belong in their happy and cozy lives and affords him the space he desires. He keeps another scar hidden beneath his shirt on the right side of his chest, preferring to keep it out of sight even from himself to avoid the memory of having nearly lost his life. He walks with a jacket upon his unmarked shoulder, which he wears if he needs the extra layer. Tattered jeans supported by a belt adorn his legs and, finally, he wears an old pair of sturdy and heavy boots, but hardly notices their weight after having worn them for over a year.

Starting Location: Earth, South City

Biography:

John lived not on the streets, but he lived off them in South City. He was the product of a hobo pairing and neither of his parents was too thrilled to have a son. Many among the homeless use sex as a means to forget their problems for a little while and certainly not to add to them with a demanding child. His mother birthed him alone in a back alley and, as soon as she was abulatory, hurriedly dropped him off at an orphanage where the abandoned infants were as numerous as they were unwanted.

Where his early childhood lacked formal education, he received the vital lessons of survival in his rundown and neglected community. Rule 1. Take what you can carry. Rule 2. Run and hide.

He often lost what he took, especially food, to the bigger boys at the orphanage whose attempts at thievery may have been clumsy, but their efforts in bullying proved fruitful. He eventually learned to hide the best of what he stole and sacrificed the leftovers to his tormentors to placate them.

John received plenty of beatings for taking from the wrong people, but for every time he felt his body break, he became better at taking and keeping what he wanted and his body hardened from the repeated physical abuse. His injuries stunted his growth and his nose, from repeated fists to the face, remained crooked, refusing to heal properly. He once nearly died from a knife wound, leaving an ugly scar on the right side of his chest where the blade entered, slipped past his ribs, and almost tore open his lung. His near-death experience taught him how to handle himself in a knife fight. Rule 1. You gonna’ get stabbed. Rule 2. Pick where you gonna’ get stabbed. The second time someone threatened him with a knife he trapped the knife in his shoulder and dislocated the offender’s jaw.

He left the orphanage at age 17 of his own volition. He figured no one was going to come and rescue him from the slums. There certainly had never been nor would there ever be someone to call Mom who waited for him in the downstairs kitchen with a hot breakfast and a school lunch as well as someone to call Dad who worried if he got on the bus on time for school each weekday morning and completed his homework each weekday night. He had little to his name and hardly a name, but he would fight to keep even that much; he resolved the next bully he encountered would be eating pavement through a straw.

A crack resounded as his body made contact with the solid stone structure behind him. He hoped he had somehow damaged the building, but a lightning bolt of pain sizzling up and down his spine told him otherwise. He immediately collapsed onto the ground, unable to catch himself before he tasted gravel. A groan escaped his lips as the familiar embrace of agony enclosed his form and darkened his vision.

His vision cleared up soon after the moment a fist dug into his scalp and jerked John upright. John was brought to kneel and his head forcefully angled back so that he met the smiling and mocking face of his attacker. Good, John thought, I have his attention. Why was that a good thing again? Something about a girl? Wait! Where was she?

He almost panicked as he remembered what had gotten him into this mess. A woman’s scream brought him here. What he encountered was a topless and terrified woman and a monster of a man with a fistful of torn fabric. Whether out of an alien sense to do what’s right or the instinctual male desire to prove what a tough guy he was, John rushed to her aid and landed himself in a world of hurt.

His eyes flicked from side to side, but he saw no sign of her. What a soft guy I turned out to be. He would have chuckled if he hadn’t been busy coughing blood. “Looks like you’re the one who’ll be eating pavement! Ha!” The ebony-haired giant punctuated his statement with a blow to the side of John’s head.

John coughed and sputtered as the alien eyed him with amusement, tail swishing back and forth from behind. “As far as humans go, you sure can take a beating.” With that he proceeded to kick his fallen victim repeatedly until he grew bored and John was certain the Neanderthal had broken half his ribs.

John kept quiet and hoped the pain would lull him to sleep, but it had the opposite effect. Its sharpness kept him from passing out. He willed the alien away and kept his mouth shut. The rules of disagreements were simple on the street. Rule 1. If you can’t take a hit, keep your trap shut. Rule 2. If you can’t keep fighting, keep your trap shut. He sighed with relief and trembled a little with fear when he saw the freak alien literally take flight and leave him.
